My visit to Lightyear in The Netherlands

30th July 2022

The world of automobiles has fascinated me since childhood—the power of engines, sleek designs, ingenious engineering, and captivating stories have ignited my passion. Among these marvels, Lightyear cars stand out, using both battery and solar energy for propulsion.

Originally a student-led team at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Lightyear transitioned into a pioneering commercial venture. 2019 I first encountered Lightyear when they unveiled the Lightyear One, a solar electric vehicle with a curved solar panel that maximises energy capture. In 2022, I had the privilege of seeing these vehicles in person.

During the European Hyperloop Week, I explored at my own pace, valuing the guidance of experts in uncovering hidden gems. Visiting Lightyear's research and development centre was a priority. With two days left before my flight, I contacted Lightyear employees via LinkedIn. Engin Senol's response gave me hope, and driven by my unwavering curiosity; I decided to visit.

I reached the Automotive Campus in Helmond 't Hout.  Eric Rutten generously offered a tour. Witnessing Lightyear's innovations in solar cell technology, electric motors, and excellent chassis design up close fulfilled a dream, enriched my knowledge, and connected me with visionary minds in the world of technology.
